Basic information about Narita Airport Terminal 2

Narita Airport has three terminals, with numerous airlines arriving and departing from them.

To use the terminal comfortably, it helps to understand its basic layout.

Basic layout

Narita Airport Terminal 2 opened in 1992. Together with Terminal 1, which opened in 1973, it has long supported Japan’s gateway to the skies.

The floor details for Terminal 2 are as follows.

There’s also an observation deck, where you can enjoy watching planes take off and land up close.

Procedures at Narita Airport Terminal 2

Before using the terminal, it helps to understand check-in and departure/arrival locations so you’re not scrambling on the day of travel. We’ve also summarized the approximate time and location needed from arriving at the terminal to boarding your flight, so use this as a reference.

Check-in procedure

【International flights】

The check-in counters are on the 3rd floor of Terminal 2. Since there are numerous counters, if you get lost, try the support center on the same floor.

Check-in times vary by airline. In general, check-in opens 2 to 2.5 hours before departure. Check-in closes 45 minutes to 1 hour before departure, so it’s best to allow plenty of time.

Note that domestic flight check-in is on the 1st floor, so be careful when using it.

Departure lobby

【International flights】

The departure lobby is on the same 3rd floor as the check-in counters. All procedures up to moving to the boarding gate take place on the 3rd floor, so there’s little movement involved, and you can relax after completing boarding procedures. Note that depending on your flight, you may need to move to the 4th floor.

【Domestic flights】

Boarding procedures take place after moving to the 2nd floor. After that, boarding takes place from the 1st or 3rd floor. Unlike international flights, there are fewer restaurants and shops, so be sure to eat and shop beforehand.

Arrival lobby

At Terminal 2, the arrival lobby is on the 1st floor. Bus and taxi stops are right in front, making it easy to get moving after arrival.

Domestic flights arrive on the 2nd floor, so if you want to use a bus, taxi, or train, you’ll need to move to another floor — keep this in mind.
