Haneda Airport Airport Access

10 min read

If you’re flying JAL domestically from Haneda Airport, you might not be sure which terminal to use. Haneda Airport has three terminals, and which one you need depends on the airline and whether the flight is international.

This article explains which terminal to use for JAL domestic flights at Haneda, along with the process from arrival to boarding. We’ll also cover how to get to the airport and give a detailed look at the departure lobby, so be sure to use this as a reference.

JAL Domestic Flights at Haneda Airport Use Terminal 1

If you’re flying a JAL domestic flight from Haneda Airport, the terminal you need is Terminal 1. Domestic flights depart from and arrive at Terminal 1, serving the following airlines:

  • Japan Airlines (JAL)
  • Japan Transocean Air (JTA)
  • Skymark Airlines (SKY)
  • StarFlyer (SFJ)

Terminal 1 has six floors: the departure lobby is on the 2nd floor, and the arrival lobby is on the 1st floor. Details for each floor are as follows.

5FRestaurants, rental meeting rooms
4FRestaurants & shops
3FRestaurants & shops, connecting bridge to P1/P2 parking
2FDeparture lobby
1FArrival lobby, bus/taxi stands
B1FKeikyu Line/Tokyo Monorail ticket gates, connecting passage to Terminal 2

The departure lobby at Terminal 1 is arranged lengthwise, with the South Wing to the left of center and the North Wing to the right. Since the location of the check-in counters depends on the airline and destination, it’s helpful to use Clock Towers 1–4 as landmarks.

Differences Between Haneda Airport’s Terminals

Haneda Airport also has Terminals 2 and 3. Besides having different restaurants and facilities, the main differences are as follows.

JAL International Flights Depart from Terminal 3

While JAL domestic flights depart from and arrive at Terminal 1, JAL international flights use Terminal 3. If you’re connecting from a JAL domestic flight to a JAL international flight at Haneda, you’ll need to move from Terminal 1 to Terminal 3.

You’ll need a connection time of at least 70 minutes, so be sure to plan with some buffer. *Connections to other airlines’ international flights are said to require at least 120 minutes. Note that this varies by airline and airport.

If you have a connecting flight, you can pick up a free monorail/Keikyu Line transfer ticket at the information counter on the arrival floor.

Access to Haneda Airport Terminal 1

If you’re flying a JAL domestic flight, head to Haneda Airport Terminal 1. Here are some things to keep in mind when getting to Terminal 1.

Watch the Station Names on Trains and the Monorail

Both the Keikyu Line and the Tokyo Monorail serve Haneda Airport. Station names differ depending on the line, so be careful.

Buses Stop at Each Terminal

Buses generally stop at each terminal, so you can simply get off at “Terminal 1.” Buses departing from the airport can also be boarded from the 1st floor lobby of Terminal 1.

That said, some early morning or late night services may skip Terminal 1, so check the timetable for your specific route for details.

P1 and P2 Are the Closest Parking Lots

If you’re driving to the airport, using parking lots P1 or P2 gives you smooth access to Terminal 1. P1 connects directly to the South Wing, while P2 connects directly to the North Wing.

However, P1 doesn’t accept advance reservations, so if you want to reserve a spot, use P2 instead.

How to Get to Terminal 1 If You Arrive at Another Terminal

If you end up at the wrong terminal by mistake, you can still get to Terminal 1 using the free inter-terminal shuttle bus. From Terminal 2, you can also walk to Terminal 1.

Here’s how to transfer from each terminal and how long it takes.

Boarding Process for JAL Domestic Flights at Terminal 1

If it’s your first time flying a JAL domestic flight, it helps to know what to expect. This section covers the following topics:

  • The boarding process
  • Differences between departure lobbies
  • Lounge information

Let’s look at each in detail.

The Boarding Process

Here’s the boarding process and the relevant deadlines.

StepDeadline (before departure)Ideal timing (before departure)
Check-inBy 30 min beforeBy 60 min before
Baggage drop-offBy 30 min beforeBy 60 min before
Passing through securityBy 20 min beforeBy 40 min before
Arriving at the gateBy 10 min beforeBy 20 min before

For domestic flights, arrive at least 60 minutes before your flight’s departure time. This is because check-in and getting to the gate often take longer than expected.

Once you arrive at the airport, enter your flight information at a counter or self-check-in kiosk to check in. If you use JAL’s Touch & Go service, you can skip check-in altogether.

After checking in, drop off any baggage you can’t bring into the cabin. If you check in at a counter, you can drop off your baggage there; if you use a self-check-in kiosk, you can drop it off at a self-service baggage kiosk. Baggage drop-off must be completed by 30 minutes before departure at the latest.

Once everything is done, head to security. Knives, scissors, and other bladed items can’t be brought into the cabin, so check for these before going through security. You’ll need to remove jackets, electronics, and drinks from your bag and place them in a tray for screening.

Note that if you don’t pass through security by 20 minutes before departure, you won’t be able to board.

The Departure Lobby for JAL Domestic Flights Differs by Destination

Once security is done, head to your gate based on your flight. You can check your gate on the airport’s information boards or on your boarding pass.

Terminal 1’s departure lobby is divided into the North Wing and South Wing. Which one you use depends on your flight’s destination, so be sure to check.

Eastern Japan destinations: North Wing

If your JAL domestic flight is headed to Hokkaido, Tohoku, Hokuriku, Tokai, or Kinki, head to the North Wing. Skymark flights also depart from the North Wing.

Western Japan destinations: South Wing

If your JAL domestic flight is headed to Chugoku, Shikoku, Kyushu, or Okinawa, it departs from the South Wing. Japan Transocean Air and StarFlyer flights also depart from the South Wing.

Terminal 1 Has Five Lounges

Terminal 1 has three paid lounges and a JAL lounge. If you have time before your flight, using a lounge is a great option.

The paid lounges offer soft drinks, while the JAL lounge offers alcoholic drinks and amenities such as showers, letting you relax before departure.

Business hours may change, so check each lounge’s official website before visiting.

NearMe Is Also a Great Option for Getting to Haneda Airport or Your Destination

If it’s your first time using Haneda Airport, train transfers can be confusing, and taking the bus can feel intimidating. You might also be unsure how to get to your final destination after arriving at Haneda from a regional airport.

If you’re not sure how to get to Terminal 1, why not try NearMe? Here’s a detailed look at what it offers and how much it costs.

About NearMe

NearMe is a service operated by NearMe, Inc. that picks you up and takes you to your destination. It’s fully reservation-based, and since you share a shuttle that seats up to 9 passengers, it costs less than a taxi.

Unlike buses or trains, you don’t need to travel to a fixed stop — you can be picked up from your home, workplace, or anywhere you like. Each passenger can also check one suitcase for free, which is handy when you have heavy luggage.

NearMe currently offers two ways to ride, so you can choose the one that suits your needs.

・Door-to-door: We’ll pick you up right in front of “wherever you like” — your home, a hotel, your workplace. This is ideal when you have heavy luggage or the weather is bad. ・NearMe Spot: Gather at a designated “virtual stop” near a station. In exchange for a short walk, you get an even better rate than door-to-door!

There might be a spot near your nearest station too? New spots keep appearing near major stations like Jiyugaoka, Sangenjaya, Gakugei-Daigaku, Seijogakuenmae, Nakameguro, and Komazawa-Daigaku-mae.
