Taxis are convenient when heading to the airport. However, riding alone can be pricey, and that may be putting some people off using one even if they’d like to.

In this article, we’ll explain shared-ride taxis, which let you travel for even less than a regular taxi. We’ll also compare services and pricing, so if you’re wondering how to get to Haneda Airport, be sure to check this out.

What Is a Shared-Ride Taxi at Haneda Airport?

Using a shared-ride taxi lets you travel more affordably than a regular taxi. Let’s take a look at what shared-ride taxis are, along with their pros and cons.

Overview

A shared-ride taxi is a service where multiple passengers share a single taxi. Because it’s entirely reservation-based with pickup and destination points set in advance, you won’t be paired up with random people nearby at boarding time. Compared to a regular taxi, it’s cheaper to get to the airport, and since you can be picked up from wherever you like, it’s less of a burden than trains or buses.

Flat-rate taxis are another option for getting to Haneda Airport. These are taxis where the fare to the airport is fixed in advance based on the pickup location — a feature shared-ride taxis also have. However, with a flat-rate taxi you pay for the whole vehicle, plus toll charges are billed separately, so many people traveling in small groups find it expensive.

Chartered taxis are another taxi service with a fixed advance price. Rather than being priced by pickup location, they charge a flat rate by time, so they’re a good choice if you want to make stops beyond a simple home-to-Haneda trip, or if you want to sightsee along the way.

Pros and Cons of Shared-Ride Taxis

Here are the pros and cons of shared-ride taxis at Haneda Airport.

ProsCons
Cheaper than other taxi services, door-to-door from home, environmentally friendlyHard to book same-day, travel time can be longer

Let’s look at each in detail.

Pro ① Cheaper Than Other Taxi Services

Flat-rate and chartered taxis are less expensive than a regular metered fare. However, a shared-ride taxi costs about half of a flat-rate taxi, making it even more affordable. Since the fare is set per person rather than per vehicle, it’s especially recommended if you’re traveling alone.

Pro ② Door-to-Door From Home

Unlike trains and buses, a shared-ride taxi lets you set your pickup point wherever you like — home, work, anywhere. There’s no need to lug heavy baggage around, and no transfers. That makes it a great option for families or women traveling alone. You can travel door-to-door all the way to Haneda Airport.

Pro ③ Environmentally Friendly

Rather than everyone heading to the airport booking their own taxi, sharing a single taxi cuts CO2 emissions from travel, making it kinder to the environment. Using shared-ride taxis also helps address driver shortages and eases traffic congestion.

Con ① Hard to Book Same-Day

Unlike buses and trains, which you can board same-day without a reservation, shared-ride taxis require advance booking. This means extra hassle to reserve, and cancellation fees may apply for last-minute changes.

Con ② Travel Time Can Be Longer

Since not all passengers board from the same location, the route can sometimes take a detour depending on the pickup point. As a result, it may take longer than heading straight to Haneda Airport. That said, when there are no other passengers, the ride can go smoothly.

How to Book and Use the Service

Since NearMe is entirely reservation-based, book by 6:00 PM the day before your desired travel date. However, for Haneda and Narita flights only, same-day bookings are also accepted if seats are available.

Enter the following information via the official website or app:

  • Destination
  • Pickup location
  • Arrival date/time or flight name
  • Number of passengers
  • Number of checked bags

Several routes matching your schedule will be displayed; choose your preferred option to make a provisional booking. This doesn’t confirm your reservation right away — you’ll be notified within 24 hours whether a vehicle can be arranged. If a vehicle can’t be arranged, try a provisional booking for a different time.

If a vehicle is available, your booking is confirmed, and you’ll be able to check the meeting point and vehicle details by 6:00 PM the day before. Payment is processed online using the credit card registered at the time of the provisional booking, so there’s nothing to pay on the day.

Customer Reviews

Finally, here are some reviews from people who’ve actually used NearMe. While some praised being able to use it even late at night, and how comfortable it is traveling with children, others noted that it can take longer. Since travel time can also be affected by road conditions, it’s best to book with some time to spare.

NearMe’s smart shuttle is really convenient. Staying overnight before a flight blows the budget, and killing time at the airport is rough — plus all that accumulated fatigue… I got to stay home until the last minute, and going straight from home to the airport was great. The trip back was especially impressive. #smartshuttle #nearme

Used NearMe for the first time and it’s super convenient and cheap 😂 With a ton of luggage plus a small child in tow, I finally made it to Haneda Airport — taking the train after that would’ve been way too much, so I want to keep using this 👍 Okinawa is technically an option too, but I guess there are no operators there? It seems basically unavailable. Hope it expands there soon! pic.twitter.com/RudiadfFH4

@nearme_jp I used NearMe. The ride itself was easy, but it took quite a detour — Haneda → Setagaya → Bunkyo. Normally I’d get home in about 30 minutes, but it took an hour and a half. I guess that’s unavoidable with a shared ride. I think it’d be more convenient if paired with someone heading the same direction. Maybe it felt worse because I was the only passenger on the way to Narita. pic.twitter.com/sBi798yqhQ
