How Much Does a Taxi to Narita Airport Cost? Recommended Alternatives to Taxis
Narita Airport

9 min read

“I finally got my flight booked, but there’s no transportation option at just the right time.” “Arriving early and waiting for hours at the airport is exhausting… but missing your flight because you cut it too close is even worse.”

It’s about 75km from central Tokyo to Narita Airport. Because it’s such a long distance, many people want to make the trip as comfortable as possible. A taxi doesn’t run on a fixed schedule, so it lets you travel to your destination on your own terms.

Here, we’ll introduce the fare for taking a taxi to the airport, along with other recommended ways to get there.

How Much Does a Taxi to Narita Airport Cost?

Taking a taxi from Tokyo Station to Narita Airport costs about ¥25,000. That covers a distance of roughly 70km. Since the route uses expressways, extra tolls will be added on top. Also note that, depending on the time of day, a late-night surcharge may apply, adding a bit more to the fare. It’s a good idea to bring more cash than you think you’ll need, just to be safe.

Fare Table for Traveling from Central Tokyo to Narita Airport

“I had a late-night flight planned, but I had one too many drinks and missed the train! I might not make it in time!”

When you need to get to the airport as fast as possible, knowing roughly how long it will take gives you peace of mind and makes it easier to decide your next move. We’ve put together the minimum fares you can expect when heading from central Tokyo to Narita Airport. Note that taking the expressway cuts about an hour off the times listed below.

Typical Fares from Around Tokyo

Taking a taxi from central Tokyo to Narita Airport costs around ¥30,000 on average. Setagaya and Minato wards run about ¥30,000, while Sumida Ward comes to about ¥24,000. Because wards vary in size, the fare can differ depending on exactly where within the ward you start from. Also, like any other vehicle, taxis are affected by traffic conditions such as congestion and accidents, so it’s best to allow plenty of extra time.

Taxis Are Pricey Unless It’s an Emergency

A taxi is a mode of transportation you can rely on in an emergency. When you need to move right away, a taxi’s flexibility makes it convenient. If you’re traveling with a group, splitting the fare can help keep costs down. Even so, it comes to at least about ¥3,000 per person one-way—an expensive option compared to other choices. Save it for situations like “I’m not going to make my flight!”

What Other Ways Are There to Get to Narita Airport Besides a Taxi?

Besides taxis, you can also get to Narita Airport using public transportation like trains and buses. And “trains and buses” covers a lot of ground—JR lines, subways, shuttles, limousine buses, and more. Below, we’ll introduce each option along with its fare and convenience.

NearMe

One option for traveling from central Tokyo to Narita Airport is NearMe. NearMe is a shared shuttle service that seats up to 9 passengers. Its key feature is that riders can choose their own pickup and drop-off locations at no extra charge. For example, you can set your pickup point right in front of the hotel you stayed at the night before. When the scheduled time comes, the shuttle picks you up, so until then you can just relax at the hotel.

Buses and Limousine Buses

Buses and limousine buses have long been a popular way to travel. Since you can reach your destination without transferring along the way, even while carrying heavy luggage, they keep the hassle to a minimum. Here are a few bus and limousine bus options you can use to get to Narita Airport.

Limousine Bus

The Airport Limousine Bus operates across a wide area of the Kanto region, with departures once an hour. The fare is ¥2,800 for adults and ¥1,400 for children. Travel time from Tokyo Station to the farthest stop, Narita Terminal 1, is about 1 hour 20 minutes.

Service Area

Tokyo Station, Nihombashi, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Roppongi, Hibiya, Odaiba, Ebisu, Shinagawa, Shibuya, Futako-Tamagawa, Asakusa, Kichijoji, Nishi-Kokubunji, Tachikawa, Hachioji, Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama

With so many service areas, it’s a reassuring option even if you’re coming from farther afield. However, since buses only run once an hour, you’ll need to plan your schedule around the bus timing.

Tokyo Shuttle / THE Access Narita※ (AIRPORT BUS “TYO-NRT”)

The Tokyo Shuttle, operated by Keisei Bus, costs ¥1,000 one-way. It only picks up at four locations: Tokyo Station, Ginza Station, Oedo Onsen, and Toun Garage. Travel time from Tokyo Station to Narita Airport Terminal 1 is about 1 hour 10 minutes. Since pickup points are limited, if you’re based somewhere farther from central Tokyo, you’ll need to connect via train. Also, because the Tokyo Shuttle is popular, be aware that without a reservation you may not be able to board the departure time you want.

※Since February 1, 2020, the Tokyo Shuttle and THE Access Narita have been jointly operated as AIRPORT BUS “TYO-NRT.”

Train

Trains are a fantastic, hassle-free way to get around. You can board without a reservation, and in the city, even if you miss one, the next one comes along quickly. That said, “train” covers a lot of ground—JR lines, subways, private railways, and further distinctions like local and limited express services. Here are a few train options you can take from Tokyo Station to Narita Airport.

Narita Express

The Narita Express connects Narita Airport directly with major stations like Tokyo and Shinagawa. Travel time between Tokyo Station and Narita Airport is quite fast, at about 60 minutes. The fare between Tokyo Station and Narita Airport is ¥3,070 for a standard seat and ¥4,640 for a Green Car seat. There’s also a nice perk: booking a ticketless fare online saves you ¥200. One catch is that the last departure from Tokyo is relatively early, around 8pm, so travelers on international flights may find there isn’t a convenient departure available.

Keisei Skyliner

The Keisei Skyliner is an airport limited express running between Narita Airport Station and Ueno Station. Traveling at speeds of up to 160km/h, it can get you from Nippori Station to Narita Airport Terminal 2 Building Station in as little as 36 minutes. In addition to the basic fare, you’ll need a ¥1,250 Liner ticket. The fare is ¥2,520 for adults (¥2,507 with an IC card) and ¥1,270 for children (¥1,258 with an IC card). Also note that with the Skyliner, getting off partway invalidates your ticket. If there’s a station you want to stop at along the way, be sure to research your options carefully before purchasing.

We cover the Narita Express and Keisei Skyliner in more detail in this article.

Access Express

The fare between Ueno Station and Narita Airport is ¥1,240 (¥1,235 with an IC card). Compared to the Skyliner, the travel time is longer at 1 hour 20 minutes, but that’s offset by the lower fare. However, since only a limited number of trains run per day, be sure to plan your timing carefully if you use this option.
